The term |muse| has been used to describe extraordinary dancers who inspire and motivate choreographers to create dances. In this thesis, I research the role of muses in the creative realm of choreography. I investigate how muses in dance can effect creativity and flow within the creation of choreography. As part of this research, I examine two recent works I produced during my graduate studies, Within ... (2011) and selected works from In Medio(2012). I use these works as qualitative data to understand and explain the nature of the choreographer-dancer relationship. This information helps me evaluate the explicit and implicit behaviors present within the working relationship of choreographers and dancers. The ideas that I develop about the creative process of both choreographers and dancers is influenced by research from creativity and flow theorist, Csíkzentmiháyli Miháyl, and cognitive and education theorist, Howard Gardner. Their theories on creativity have provided me with a framework for observing the choreographic process.
