In the creation of a work for modern dance, I identify two familiar and well-documented collaborative models that represent |poles| of this process: music-first and choreography-first. Instead of the music or choreography being completely finished before the other is made to |fit| it, I am interested in developing other collaborative methods that explore the |middle-ground| between these two poles, primarily through my year-long collaboration with choreographer Randall Smith. This thesis articulates my exploration of this process as a composer for dance and my pursuit of a more equitable working relationship between the choreographer and composer, where each party contributes to the direction and development of the collaborative work. The methods we engaged in as an artistic team have allowed for a more fluid and equal relationship to emerge between choreography and composition as they impacted each other during the creative process. After the preface, this paper begins with a historical overview of early collaborative processes in modern dance history. Upon establishing the roots of certain collaborative models, I will present interviews with active choreographers and composers in order to gain insight into the collaborative processes shaping the conflux of choreography and music in a new dance work as practiced today. The methods I have employed with my collaborative partner will be examined in the context of our performance outcomes, in addition to the directions they have taken us while working together.
